I have come across  2 JBCO brands in South Africa that I can buy off the shelf and I thought to feature them on the blog. As far as I know, and I stand to be corrected, the only JBCO brand available online (other than these 2) is the Sunny Isle one. So what I like about these ones is that they can be bought off the shelf. As much as I love online shopping, there is something about being able to handle a product in your hands, read the labels before buying it.

Update 13 December 2016… After getting numerous emails asking me if I sell hair products; I want to state here that I do not sell any hair products, accessorries, extensions, jamaican black castor oil etc. I’m a blogger sharing my hair journey. I also do not know where you can find hair products in towns/cities where I do  not live. I can help you with regards to finding products in Durban.

wpid-20150218_155420.jpgThese are the 2 brands that are available off the shelf in South Africa: Umera JBCO and Tropical JBCO

Umera JBCO

  • Made in South Africa, Bethlehem to be exact
  • R170 for 150ml
  • Contact the brand on twitter @AlwaysUmera and on their website

Tropical JBCO

  • Made in the US
  • R85 for 50ml
  • Stocked in some salons
  • Contact the brand on their website, and they ship all over Africa

I have been using the Tropical JBCO since January and I have since switched over to the Umera JBCO to give that a try. I mix 50/50 with coconut oil and add some essential oils to the mixture. I let the mixture sit in a dark place for about 5 days before I start using it.

Happy shopping!

Update: I have been in touch with the people at Umera, I have listed some of the places in the different provinces where you can get their JBCO off the shelf. The recommended price is R170, however in some places it might be more expensive. This list is not exhaustive, I have taken the ‘biggest’ towns per province. You can contact the Umera people directly if you want to ask about your specific dorpie πŸ™‚

Hi Lungi. How is it going with tropical JBCO I started using it yesterday should I expect miracles?

    1. Lungi

      Hi Noxolo,

I loved it when I used it – it made my new growth very soft and thicker.

However it’s not a miracle product. You have to use it in conjuction with other healthy hair practices to gain the maximum benefit.

Hi Rene, I can’t say 100% for sure that it will help you with your thinning hair – this can be attributed to a lot of other issues. You can try it for yourself and see.

  17. Mpumie

Hi sis Lungi….can i use JCOL together with soul mate hairfood?

    1. Lungi

Hi Mpumie, I’m not familiar with Soul Mate Hairfood. The JBCO can be used by itself.

  18. Mloowie

    Hi Lungi
What color is the actual oil in the tropical jbco bottle? I bought a bottle in JHB and the oil is clear like normal castor oil. I was under the impression that it would be black because of the name. Can you advise

    1. Lungi

Hi Mloowie, it’s a bit darker than usual castor oil but not so much – it’s not black at all

  19. Alima

    Hi Lungi,

Wondering if Jamaican Black castor oil comes in a tub, saw it on a website and seems in South Africa there’s only the bottles available.

    1. Lungi

Hi Alima, I haven’t come across JBCO in a tub only in the bottles. I think that because the oil is a liquid at room temperature, it will be difficult to have it in a tub.

  20. Portia

Hiwhere can I buy this castor oil around nelspruit

    1. Lungi

Hi Portia, please check the Tropical and Umera JBCO website for their stockists
