While I was at Clicks some time ago I picked up an issue of the magazine Drum Hair, I had previously seen some previous issues on the shelves however I was never tempted to buy until now. I picked up the Spring/Summer 2014 issue which I believe is the latest that is out there. The magazine cost R42 and has 114 pages.

Like I said, this is the first hair magazine that I have bought – the layout was similar to most magazines: a few articles, some celeb interviews, how-tos, advice columns etc. This particular issue feature Nhlanhla Nciza as the cover girl and the main article was about her different hairstyles over the years – and she is known for changing up her hair frequently!

What I liked:

  • I like that the magazine catered for all types of hair: relaxed, natural, dreadlocks etc. so there is something for everyone.
  • The how-tos were also informative and can give you some hairstyle inspiration.
  • There is also a street style feature of ordinary women and their hairstyles – I particularly loved this one because whenever I drive in my city and I stop at a traffic light, I always check out the hairstyles of the people crossing the road…trust me, this is where the latest hair-dos can be found 🙂

Not so much:

  • I don’t think the magazine gave me any extra/new information that I couldn’t have found out on the internet, but that being said, I read a lot about hair on the internet, so a newbie to this healthy hair world might find the information fresh and new.

I probably will not be buying the magazine again – I think the internet and the blogs suffice in giving me all the information I need to know about healthy hair.

How do you feel about hair magazines? Have you ever bought one? Let me know!

I’ve bought hair magazines before but I hardly see them in Nigeria. The internet provides TONS of information. 🙂 Like you, I think it’s more than enough for me

We are definitely in the age of digital! We only have just 2 black hair publications in SA and they release a new issue at most twice a year.

A lot of hair magazines carry information already available on the internet these days. I only ever read them at the salon nowadays I only like the ones with information on where to find local stylists and new hairstyles etc.

I’ve never bought or seen a magazine that is dedicated to hair care. I would buy just to see the trending hairstyles but then again you can just look out your car window for free to see what’s in fashion lol
