Lessons learnt on the healthy hair journey

I have been on this healthy hair journey for the past 3 years now and over this time I have learnt so much that I don’t think I would have if I wasn’t on this journey. Besides the obvious, learning about my hair and what it likes and doesn’t like, here are some of the things that I attribute to being on this journey that have enriched my life for the better.

Confidence in my styling
I was one of those people who had no idea how to handle my hair, so whenever I had a big event or day, I always made a plan to get my hair ‘did’ at a salon in some sort or other protective style; I had zero confidence in my styling abilities. These days, I can confidently hook up a perm rod set or roller set to make sure I look ‘did’ for any special occasion in my life. I no longer freak out if my hair is not in a protective style like braids or a weave. Granted my styling skills are not way up there, I am still learning and believe that I will get better with time.

Consistency
Healthy hair does not happen overnight, one needs to put on the work consistently to see results. I also applied this to other parts of my life like exercising (though I have spectacularly fallen off the wagon for now) and skin care.

Keeping track
This goes hand in hand with consistency. Listening and observing your hair’s likes and dislikes are key to healthy hair. This means you need to be in tune with your hair/body and general health. Keeping track also helps you to celebrate those milestones that you reach, because on a day to day basis it may feel like your hair isn’t growing or that you aren’t losing those centimetres. However, if you compare over a 3 month time period it is possible to see the difference, granted that you have been consistent of course.

The art of ingredients
I read ingredients meticulously on everything that I buy now…I’m talking food, make up, skin stuff etc. We all know that one of the skills of a hair journier (made up word) is the skill of being able to judge how ‘good’ or ‘bad’ a product is based on its ingredient list. I have extended this knowledge to other parts of my life. I have stopped eating some foods based on reading the ingredient list and realising that they had waaay too much sugar than I thought or other not so nice ingredients.

Connecting with people all over the world
This is one of my favourites, being in the healthy hair world has opened me up to a number of other women around the world who are on the same journey. I love learning from other people and their techniques and I take heed of all the advice left in the comments section of my blog. On some of my wash days, I will have a few blogs open reading up on how to do a particular style/technique from another healthy hair blogger! You guys are awesome!

Make up
I’ve always dabbled in make up, a bit of mascara here and eyeliner there, but I never fully committed myself to it. After I thought I had come to grips with the healthy hair world, I naturally moved on to learning about make up. This is because most of the healthy hair Youtubers I watched were also into make up. I’m about 1.5 years into my full on make up journey and I am loving it, it’s another way that I use to express myself. I don’t think if I were not on a hair journey would I have moved into the world of make up.

So these are some of the things that I think my HHJ has helped me achieve and continue to achieve. All in all, I think that it has been such a positive in my life.

What has the HHJ contributed to in your life besides healthy hair?

Great post! I agree with you on the confidence in styling; I used to think that only stylists can do certain things like roller sets… For me it has been confidence in my hair; I used to hate how my hair looked and always wanted to hide it in braids without taking care of it. Now I feel so much better about myself, and overall I think I take better care of myself not just my hair.

That’s so true, I never thought certain styles were possible at home. People get shocked when I tell them that I do certain hairdos by myself at home.
It’s so awesome that our bodies as a whole benefit from the lesson we’ve learnt from the hhj
