Out of all the makeup products that I use, mascara is the one that I don’t spend much money on. I usually buy the Essence mascaras, and they work perfectly for me. The most expensive mascara I have bought is Miss Manga by LÓreal; and even that is not that expensive in the bigger scheme of things. So this past weekend, I received mascara from a family member – she got it in a Clinique gift bag, but she doesn’t use mascara… so I won!
I decided to compare this mascara to my usual ones that I use and see what happens, and that is exactly what I did.
In the ring we have: Essence Lash Princess Volume Mascara (R63.50) and Clinique High Impact Mascara (R275)
The Essence mascara is the one with the brush of variable thickness along its length, the Clinique mascara has the same thickness along the length. I preferred the Essence wand shape overall because I can use it to get to the shorter lashes on the inside corner of the eye.
My lashes before. I like my lash length, what I require most from a mascara is to provide volume and drama!
The final result, I used each mascara on each eye; can you guess which is which? Well, the Clinique is on the left, the eye without the beauty spot. The Essence mascara is on the right eye with the beauty spot.
I liked the volume that I got with the Essence mascara, it was definitely much more than the Clinique one. But I loved how the Clinique one separated my lashes and there was no clumping. However, I like voluminous lashes more, so the Essence mascara wins this bout. All is not lost though, I think the Clinique mascara is more suited to be used on my bottom lashes just to separate them and add a bit of volume. However, at a R200 price difference I won’t be buying a full size version of the Clinique mascara.
Do you use high end or low end mascara?
I use Low end… I feel that it does the job so I am happy
I am also a low end girl shame! through and through
I don’t use any mascara. not for falsies or own 0.5 mm lashes. maybe i shoud try it.

Hey Mvumikazi, it wouldn’t hurt 🙂
I used to be a low end kind girl but the older I get the more I realise cheaper products especially in makeup don’t always give me the desired effect.
That’s true Ika, I’ve started to notice that with foundation, it’s much better to buy the high end stuff and not have to worry about mixing it to get the right shade.
