This is the news that almost every natural has been waiting for – the arrival of the Dark and Lovely Au Naturale range in South Africa. I attended the launch event last week and went home with a goodie box containing the products in the range. I haven’t had a chance to use the products yet, I’ve just opened them and had a sniff :). In this post, I will go into a bit more detail about the product range, if you want to see what happened at the launch – you can check out my vlog.

Moisture-Replenishing Shampoo

Dark and Lovely Au Naturale South Africa

Claims Cleanses and provides a rich, quick lather that brings moisture to hair and scalp

My take This shampoo does contain Sodium Laureth Sulphate as its 3rd ingredient – so if sulphates are super drying to your hair, then this might not be the shampoo to use on a weekly basis. I typically use a sulphate containing shampoo once every 4 weeks and my hair hasn’t suffered from that.

Ingredients  AQUA / WATER / EAU, COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE, SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE, C O C A M I D E M E A , S O D I U M C H L O R I D E , PA R F U M / FRAGRANCE, PHENOXYETHANOL, POLYQUATERNIUM-7, POLYSORBATE 20, POTASSIUM SORBATE, GLYCOL STEARATE, MANGIFERA INDICA SEED OIL / MANGOSEED OIL, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, POLYQUATERNIUM-10, CITRIC ACID, SODIUM PCA, DISODIUM EDTA, SODIUM BENZOATE, BENZYL SALICYLATE, LINALOOL, BENZYL ALCOHOL, BAMBUSA VULGARIS EXTRACT, CI 19140 / YELLOW 5, CI 14700 / RED 4, CI 17200 / RED 33, CI 42090 / BLUE 1. F.I.L. D54782/2

Knot-out conditioner
Claims Easily detangles and protects your hair from dryness. Hair is immediately softened, very easy to comb through, and ready to take on any style

My take This conditioner will be perfect as an instant conditioner (this is a process right after I shampoo my hair, where I apply product to my hair and finger comb to detangle). It has to have enough slip though to make it to my staple products

Ingredients AQUA / WATER / EAU, CETEARYL A L C O H O L , E L A E I S G U I N E E N S I S O I L / PA L M O I L , BEHENTRIMONIUM CHLORIDE, PARFUM / FRAGRANCE, GLYCERIN, PHENOXYETHANOL, ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL, STEARAMIDOPROPYL DIMETHYLAMINE, MANGIFERA INDICA S E E D O I L / M A N G O S E E D O I L , C A P RY L I C / C A P R I C , T R I G LY C E R I D E , C I T R I C A C I D , C H L O R H E X I D I N E DIHYDROCHLORIDE, BENZYL SALICYLATE, LINALOOL, BAMBUSA VULGARIS EXTRACT. F.I.L. D158442/3

Plaiting Cream Pudding

Dark and Lovely Au Naturale South Africa

Claims For braiding, twisting and threading

My take I would use this product as a leave-in conditioner. It doesn’t mention anything about providing hold to the hair, so it wouldn’t be the only product I would use when doing twist outs or braid outs. For threading, I would use it on its own because I am not looking for hold when stretching my hair. The smell of this product is whoa! I opened the jar and was hit by it immediately.

Ingredients AQUA / WATER / EAU, GLYCERINE, GLYCINE SOJA OIL / SOYBEAN OIL, POLYSORBATE 80, PEG-40 HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL, TRIETHANOLAMINE, OLETH-5, CARBOMER, PARFUM / FRAGRANCE, PHENOXYETHANOL, BIS-DIGLYCERYL POLYACYLADIPATE-2, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, MANGIFERA INDICA S E E D O I L / M A N G O S E E D O I L, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, BENZYL SALYCYLATE, LINALOOL, BENZYL ALCOHOL, LIMONENE,  CI 14700 / RED 4, GERANIOL, BAMBUSA VULGARIS SAP EXTRACT, CI 19140 / YELLOW 5, CITRIC ACID. (F.I.L. D55311/4)

Afro Moisturising Butter

Dark and Lovely Au Naturale South Africa

Claims (There are no claims on the product, only directions of use)

My take I would use this product as the ‘C’ in my LCB (Liquid, Cream, shea Butter) moisturising routine. It is a bit thicker than the plaiting cream pudding and has a less in your face smell.

Ingredients AQUA / WATER / EAU, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, COCOS NUCIFERA OIL / COCONUT OIL, STEARYL ALCOHOL, GLYCERIN, DIMETHICONE, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, C12-15 ALKYL BENZOATE, STEARIC ACID, PALMITIC ACID, PARFUM / FRAGRANCE, STEARETH-100, POLYACRYLAMIDE, PHENOXYETHANOL, SORBIC ACID, C13-14 ISOPARAFFIN, STEARETH-2, LIMONENE, HEXYL CINNAMAL, HYDROXYPROPYLTRIMONIUM HONEY, LAURETH-7, MANNAN, XANTHAN GUM, PAULLINIA CUPANA SEED EXTRACT, METHYLISOTHIAZOLINONE, CITRONELLOL, CITRAL, GERANIOL, BENZYL ALCOHOL, LINALOOL, CI 19140 / YELLOW 5, CI 15985 / YELLOW 6, CI 14700 / RED 4, CI 17200 / RED 33, CI 42090 / BLUE 1

I think the range is nice a solid and a good start for the Au Naturale brand, I do think that it is missing a deep conditioner. That would have sealed the deal and made it more complete.

The Dark and Lovely Au Naturale range will be available from October at Clicks, Foschini, Dischem and Pick n Pay stores (get your Smart Shopper points!). The shampoo and conditioner will cost R35, the plaiting pudding and butter will be R70.
