This past weekend I attended the Fro Fiesta; this was the first hair event I had ever attended – events such as these are very few and far in between in Durban so I was super excited for this one. I get super jealous when I read about and see photos of hair events in other parts of the world and thus I was really glad to finally have one of our own. I had a great time; I even brought along my baby girl and she had a great time as well (I think!). Read further to see photos from the event and what went down.

I didn’t have time to take proper pictures because I was juggling a lot of balls, but here are some of the good ones I managed to take that captured the essence of the event.

The event was held in one of the event rooms at the Garden Court on the beach front. It was separated in 2 – there was the vendors area and the area where we sat and listened to the talks.

I was happy to see a number of locally made products on sale, you guys know how I like buying products ‘off the shelf’. There were other brands there whom I hadn’t heard of before – my local vendors list was definitely expanded.

Tropical JBCO were there

So was The Perfect Hair – their products are going to be available at Edgars at the Pavillion and La Lucia soon… yay!

There were also vendors selling bonnets, t-shirts and headwraps

Locally made products all th eway from Limpopo 🙂 – I love how local products are expanding to include conditioners.

One of my favourite local products, Afrilove, was also there. Nonzuzo is going to be adding a leave-in conditioner to her range.

A brand that I didn’t know about before going to the event, the owner of the brand did a headwrap tying tutorial – she is so talented!

Whitney was also there selling her microwave-able heating caps and crochet hooks. Her heating cap is a favourite of mine, it makes deep conditioning / prepooing with heat such a breeze! She’ll be launching an online shop soon, look out for that.

Dineo from SheerDee gave a talk on how to live a healthy lifestyle

I met a reader of the blog, yay! Her hair gave me life, she’s so beautiful! Thank you for the support 🙂

That’s the bit that I captured from the Fro Fiesta, there was lots more happening that I unfortunately did not capture, I will do better next time. I enjoyed the event thoroughly and thank youto the organisers for organising a hair event for us Durbanites 🙂 – I’ll definitely be attending next year’s edition.

Hi Lungi, I know what you mean about the scarcity of events particularly if you live in Bloemfontein. Seems like a great event. It’s great that we now have so many options to choose from. I’ll be sure to check out these locally made products. Great to see you rocking your hair – postpartum shedding is not an easy thing to deal with but it does pass.

You’re so right, PPS is not a fun thing – I am hoping it is going to calm down soon, but I am protective styling my hair at the moment so I don’t get to really see the shedding on a daily basis.
Hopefully Bloem will get some events soon!

You took way more pictures than I did, thanks for sharing.xo

That looks like it was so much fun. Honestly, This student budget thing isn’t working for me anymore. Right here in durban and I didn’t make it?! Le sigh. . .happy to see more events like this and south african brands hey. Something my mom and grandma would have definitely taken me to as a child/teen. Places like these are crucial.

I agree about the importance of highlighting SA brands at these events – it was lovely to see black women in the hair business. Hopefully there’ll be more events like this so you can save up to attend.
