Foundation is the ultimate base for a flawless makeup look. I’ve used countless foundations since I started wearing makeup in 2014 but I’m at a point where I’ve found the best ones for my foundation collection which I love and wear regularly. I made a decision in 2017 that I’m going to stop buying foundation from the lower end of the price spectrum and rather save up to buy high end foundations. If you want to know the reason for this decision you can watch this video where I go into a bit of depth about my reasoning.

When I’m looking for a foundation I look for one that has medium coverage at the least and it gets extra points if it the coverage is buildable. I use both liquid and stick/cream foundations interchangeably I don’t really have a preference for one over the other. If you want to see a live demo/more information on each of the foundations that I use I’ll be linking to YouTube videos which I filmed using one of each of the foundations so that you can see it in action. Let’s get into a bit more information about each of the foundations in my collection…

foundation collection for black women south africaFrom L to R: MAC Studio Fix Fluid, Fenty Beauty Pro Filtr Soft Matte Longwear Foundation, Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer, Black Opal True Color Pore Perfecting Powder Foundation, Black Opal True Color Pore Perfecting Liquid Foundation, Bobbi Brown Stick Foundation [I didn’t retouch this picture so I can show the true colours – I used a ring light]

MAC Studio Fix Fluid. NC 47. R460
This is the newest foundation in my collection I got it as a gift for my birthday in 2017.It’s the first MAC foundation that I’ve ever used. I shied away from MAC foundations because I always found the shade that the MAC salespeople recommended to me (NW45) was was too red for me. When I went in to get matched at MAC in November I was told that they have added new shades between 45 and 50, which was great news for me.

Bobbi Brown Stick Foundation. 6.5 Warm Almond. R575
This is the first stick foundation that I ever bought. I love how easy it is to apply and it blends very well. It gives my skin a great skin like finish which I absolutely love. I really don’t use it as often as I should.

Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer. Golden. R540
I am yet to fall in love with this foundation. I bought it because I was interested in the whole foundation+concealer combo that it has going on

Fenty Beauty Pro Filtr Soft Matte Longwear Foundation. 410. $34
This was the foundation of the year in 2017 even though it was only released in September. I knew I had to get my hands on it. I watched a million videos to find my right shade and eventually settled on 410, I also think 390 would work as well. To be fair, I wasn’t that taken by this foundation at first – it was just OK. However my opinions have changed and I love it soooo much. It really acts like a filter for my skin and the finish is to die for, I’m trying to use it sparingly now because I want to save it. I’m planning to buy 1 more bottle of 410 and also 390 just to try that one out as well.

Black Opal True Color Pore Perfecting Liquid Foundation. Nutmeg. R285
This is my favourite affordable foundation. It provides such a great finish to my skin and is great for people with oily skin. I do find that the shade is a bit too rich for my skin especially in the winter months when I’m a bit lighter, but it is perfect for the summer. If you take into account the price and what it offers then it is the perfect foundation.

Black Opal True Color Pore Perfecting Powder Foundation. Truly Topaz. R295
This foundation I received at a Black Opal event that I attended a year ago when they were launching their new branding and packaging. We weren’t given a choice of which shade we wanted to try out. You can tell from the swatches that this foundation has different undertones to the others that I normally use so it’s not a great match for my skin tone. I have tried it out once or twice before and made it work but I don’t naturally gravitate towards it.

Do you use any of these in your routine? What are your thoughts on them? Let me know.
