My first big chop was very dramatic, I planned it for months beforehand and everything was orchestrated and coordinated. My second big chop on the other hand was very last moment and a quick decision. My hair has been going through a lot since I had my daughter, I wrote about my postpartum shedding here and a filmed a video for my Youtube channel. I became tired of the stated of my hair and just went ahead and chopped it all off, the last time I had hair this short I was in varsity.
Current regimen
What regimen sis? lol! i’ve been doing the bare minimum to my hair. I wash it a few times a week using what ever shampoo or conditioner is in my shower. I haven’t been deep conditioning at all and my hair is already telling me know that it’s lacking some moisture.
Not active retaining length
I am currently over putting in effort to retain length, I have been doing it since 2013 when I found this world of healthy hair and I am tired. So now I’m just doing the bare minimum and breaking all the rules and it feels good! I feel I’m enjoying it because I know that whenever the time comes when I want to retain length again I have the know-how to do so.
Protective styling
Even though I am not actively retaining length I am still protective styling using wigs. I’ve fallen in love with wigs over the 10 months and I love how I can use them to change up my look. I am currently wearing wigs to work during th week and I wear my own hair out over the weekend.
So that is the current status of my hair and my second big chop, I will keep updating if anything changes but I am really enjoying the low maintenance, low fuss state.
Hi Lungi,
I was very interested in watching your hair journey because for me, you were so real and honest. I’ve watched your YouTube video and I must say I would have chopped it off as well. I went natural after the birth of my daughter because I looked at the condition of my hair, got a scissors and chopped! Six months later I found out about this “natural hair trend”. My daughter’s hair is armpit length and every time I have to wash her hair it feels like work. So do enjoy that short hair while you can because we both know how much work it is. In the meantime, we’ll just continue enjoying your blog about everything else.
Thank you for the kind words Diapeng! Long natural hair really is hard work, I guess that is the part that we sometimes forget in our quest for long hair. I’m definitely going to enjoy this short hair phase.
Yhu, discovering the world natural hair was exciting but I can’t help but feel like we were sold lies babes.I . .or at least we don’t have realistic expectations for ourselves? I dunno. I’ve become less and less entusiastic about my naps over the last few months but have been thoroughly enjoying the lack of istadium. I’ve joined the wig gang too and i feel like i have so much more freedom. I no longer panick over rain and don’t have to force myself to retwist when I’m tired at night. the fro only makes appearances on special occasions now.

It’s such a lot of work! I agree with you there. I feel like when I started my healthy hair journey I wanted to do *all* the steps! But I’m finding now that my hair can survive with the most minimum and still be healthy, this thing shouldn’t feel like a chore at all!
You did whaaaaaaat? You are brave I don’t think I’d ever be able to have hair that short haa…. You’re looking good 🙂
It’s all off sis! I’m loving looking like a 21 year old 🙂
You look great Lungi. Also cut my dreadlocks to take a break and learn more about my hair afresh. Interesting journey ahead.
You look stunning. Just discovered your blog today and I’m so glad I did.
Aaawww! Thank you, Thobeka
