One of the worries that I had during my pregnancy was how it was going to affect my hair. I know, I know, it seems so trivial that whilst going through one of the most life changing experiences of my life, I was worried about my hair. Since starting my healthy hair journey, I had read about how pregnancy hormones affect hair growth and the devastating effects of postpartum shedding. That is why I was dreading this change from the beginning. I am currently about 8 weeks post partum, I don’t think that I have gone through the worst bits of postpartum shedding. However, in this post I want to share how my hair was during my pregnancy and how it is currently.
Trimming ones hair is one of those unfortunate things that need to happen if you want to maintain healthy ends and healthy looking hair. When I had relaxed hair, I hated trimming my hair because it equated to a loss in length. Since becoming natural, I have become the opposite, in the beginning of my natural hair journey, I was so scissor happy – luckily that has died down now. I recently trimmed my hair and I have decided to share the knowledge of the whole process.
I haven’t done one of these hair products haul and empties posts in a while because honestly the movements in my hair products stash haven’t been that interesting. I decided that in 2016 I will pin down my staple products, and I achieved that goal. Thus, this meant that I really didn’t buy that many new products and those that I did buy were mostly replacements. However, I have finally come to a point where I have finished quite a number of products that can constitute a meaty empties post. It’s a new year – well it has been for the past month now :). In this time of the year, I like to set yearly goals for my hair and a general theme of what I want to do with my hair for the year, and for 2017 it won’t be any different. Although, this coming year I will have limited control of what my hair does because of my pregnancy and possible post partum shedding that I might experience – I still want to set some goals that will help me go through the phase as smoothly as possible. Along with that, in this post I will go through a bit of how my hair has been since my last hair update.
There are many ‘rules’ in the natural hair community aimed to help achieve and maintain healthy hair, but sometimes life gets in the way and all those rules fly out the window. You end up stuck with shrunken, dry and not very nice looking hair. I found myself in the same boat over the December holidays, my hair was a mess! I did not moisturise for days on end – don’t even get me started on deep conditioning. Add the fact that I was at my in-laws and had to have a doek on at all times, so my hair was conveniently forgotten. However, after I got my act together, I was determined to get my hair back into it’s health and here is what I did to revive my hair.
After failing miserably a few months ago – I decided to pull up my socks and go for my 2nd attempt at a wash and go. This was sparked by my wash day last week and the products I used that made me think that I might have better luck at a wash and go this time around. So armed with tons of research and a ‘can do’ attitude, I styled my hair in a wash and go after this week’s wash day.
