Weave Wash Day

I would like to think I have perfected my wash day process when my hair is under a weave as a protective style. This is mostly thanks to the countless YouTube videos I have watched and a lot of trial and error on my part. The process I follow is simple and takes less time than a normal wash day when I have my hair out.

I decided to give my weave some TLC over the weekend since I had been so terrible at moisturising regularly in the past 2 weeks, I only managed to do 1 scalp massage during this time :(. It was a classic case of forgetting my hair once it was hidden in a protective style. I promise to do better in the future.

Firstly, I detangled the weave using my fingers first and then a wide tooth comb till it was tangle free. I mixed some of my Aunt Jackies Oh So Clean Moisturising & Softening Shampoo and some water in an applicator bottle, I added 5 drops of peppermint oil for that extra tingle which I love so much. I don’t measure the quantities accurately, I do it by eye/feel.
I applied this mixture on my scalp while my hair was dry so that I could feel where it was going and ensure that my whole head was covered. I added some water and massaged my scalp. I lathered up twice because my hair really needed it. I then put some of the shampoo directly on the weave and rinsed all of that out thoroughly. I did this portion with my head hanging over the bath tub, I made sure to hold the weave into a ponytail (as much as I can with my free hand) while I was rinsing my hair out, this minimises the pull on my actual hair since wet hair is heavier than dry hair.image
For my deep conditioner, I decided to mix 3 products because they are in bottles instead of jars and I was lazy to scoop out conditioner from a jar into the applicator bottle. I used a little bit of my favourite moisture conditioners (a combination of instant and deep conditioners): Boots Sun Swim & Gym Conditioner, Joico K-Pak Intense Hydrator and Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Moisturising Conditioner.  I mixed everything with a little bit of water. I applied the mixture on my cornrows, after that I applied some of the Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Moisturising Conditioner directly on the weave neat. I sat under heat for 20 minutes and carried on DCing for another 40 minutes without heat while I was doing other things. I then rinsed out while I was in the shower, this helps to get the hair back into order and helps to minimise tangles.

I towel dried for 20 minutes followed by 1 hour under my soft hooded drier. I moisturised my leave out using AfroBotanics Conditioning Moisturiser and stretched it using the tension method with warm air. I then sealed everything using olive oil.

The next day I moisturised using my DIY moisturising spritz and oiled my scalp using my JBCO oil mix

This weave wash day gave my hair a boost of much needed and necessary life! My scalp feels fresh and clean while the weave looks brand new and flowy – I plan to have another weave wash day in 2 weeks time. In the meantime *hhibiri…cues Sister Bettina 😀 * I plan to take care of my hair as I should; this means spraying it with my DIY moisturising spritz every second day and doing scalp massages at least 3 times a week.

hahahhaha, sister bettina is one of my favourite songs! It brings out the ratchet in me 😀

Yeah, I did add some liquid to the DC, but not as much as I did to the shampoo because I don’t want it to drip all over.
