I spent a day at Karkloof Safari Spa in mid December – it was such a great day. I had not heard about this spa before, my sister put me on. We were booked for a half day session and ended up spending most of the day there. The drive to the spa is quite the bumpy one though – there’s a fair bit of a drive on gravel road from just outside of Pietermaritzburg till you get to the spa. On the drive back we got caught in very heavy mist – I couldn’t even see 5 metres in front of the car. Other than that bit, the day was awesome.

Our session was booked for 11:30 but we arrived early so we could have breakfast and relax. We left Durban just after 08:30 and we got to the spa just after 10:00.

Upon arrival at reception we were transferred to the spa using a game drive vehicle, we managed to see some of the wildlife that’s part of the nature reserve along the way.

After checking in at the spa (and getting permission to take photos) we went to the changeroom – I’ve been to a number of spas and the changeroom here was the absolute best. There were private cubicles also provided if you aren’t open to changing in the general area.

While waiting for our breakfast we decided to relax in the hydrotherapy area…

Our half day package consisted of a 60 minute full body massage and a head massage. We started off with a ceremonial foot bath cleanse with salt scrub and I chose the Herbal Thai Poultice Massage for my massage – it was soo sublime.

After our treatments we relaxed further in the hydrotherapy area, there was also a steam room, a sauna and a combination of both… fun fact: I don’t like breathing in hot air so I’m not a fan of these rooms, I fair better in the sauna though, I can’t spend more than 5 seconds in the steam room that we air is not the one.

I had such a great day at Karkloof Safari Spa, I’ll definitely be making a return soon!
