a morning at the brunch club

Backstory: when I went to the launch of the Johnson’s Smoothies range in Cape Town last year I won a ticket to The Brunch Club – a multi course food experience hosted by chef Matt Manning. I initially thought I wouldn’t be able to redeem my prize until my recent work trip to Cape Town came up and as luck would have it my BFF was joining me for the weekend so she was able to accompany me to this experience.

So we set off to The Grub and Vine restaurant on Bree Street in Cape Town, it was so close to our hotel that it didn’t even take us 5 minutes leisurely walk there.

Grub and VineWe arrived nice an early and settled into our window table with a lovely view of the city.

Bottomless bubblesThe bubbles were bottomless… need I say more?

I need to mention here that all the food was deliciously delicious… all of the courses we had were out of this world. Let me delight you with a few photos of the grub…

arancini ballsWe started off with some arancini balls

bloody maryFollowed up by a bloody mary. The thought of tomato juice usually has my stomach turning not in a good way but this was delicious! The tomatoes were roasted and that gave the bloody mary a nice flavour.

The main course was this aged rump steak, beetroot & potato gnocchi dish. Every mouthful was sublime!

Bacon bruleeI know I said that all the food was top notch but this Bacon Brulee took it to the next level! Bacon was infused in the custard and it gave it this sweet and savoury flavour and the bacon bits on top just sealed the deal! I savoured every mouthful.

Apart from the food, the ambience at the restaurant was also amazing. The staff and the chef were super welcoming and friendly. My friend and I felt comfortable to laugh away and talk at our usual volume. The food preparation area and the restaurant were open plan so we could see our food being prepared but it was also far enough that we could have our private conversation.

Chef matt manningAnd we got a photo with the chef 🙂
